A Tale to Remember
Originally commissioned as a surprise birthday present for the mother of the three daughters pictured here, this early Lovely work was created in 1980 in Half Moon Bay, California on the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Lovely was flown out in secret by a collector of her work who wanted a family portrait for his wife. She sought a spot with a high perched view among the ice plants — the west coast’s answer to the rosa rugosa and sea oats of the east. Setting up the sisters to work together putting bows on a kite string, Lovely explains wanting not only a visual to “tie” them together in the image, but loves the layered symbolism of being tied together as siblings, growing up together, and creating a (kite-)tail/tale to remember.
