Advantage Point
This evocative scene is one of several Lovely paintings pairing flowing coastal femininity with sprawling northeastern porches and sea views. As reinforced by the double entendre in the title, this iteration more targeted on an oceanic line of sight and the feeling of the “call of the sea.” Both of those themes are gently punctuated by the binoculars in the subject’s hands. Lovely multiplies the gifts of the island here with lush over-abundance. Blooms are prolific and a darker red than the traditional pink, the single sail now is now four or more with small details on the horizon, the sea is not only centric but crashing in plumes of waves, and folds of fabric proliferating over the arm of the chair where the subject is – like the painting Summer Whites – turned around in her chair, capturing a childlike spirit.
