Here at the park’s entrance with the statue of George Washington and the ornate front gate, Lovely once again positions the viewer as voyeur, “catching people in transit,” she explains, “isolated under their umbrellas and thoughts.” Inspired by the painting Paris Street; Rainy Day, circa 1877, arguably the best known work of French artist Gustave Caillebotte, Lovely created this US variation in blue shadows and warm highlights. .
