Blooms Under Glass
This is the piece that inspired the 2021 exhibition “Nantucket in Bloom” at The Gallery at Four India on Nantucket Island. In the original greenhouse seen here (from the famed Frick Estate, Pittsburgh PA), cultivated blooms with overpowering fragrances were made almost detectable in the brightness of color, depth of shadow, and lush, layered greenery. In the artist’s own description of the inspiration, “when you’re in a greenhouse, you can’t think about anything but the flowers; being under the glass steals all your thoughts to the beauty of the plants. The Garden rules.” Nowhere does the garden rule more than on the island of Nantucket where gardens are a registered and featured part of the environment, history, and culture of the place. Lovely also states of this piece that you can find in a greenhouse the same things that bring people to Nantucket – an environment in which you can regroup and regenerate positive energy.
