Burberry’s and the Ritz
A twilight snow scene of the entrance to the Boston Public Garden from Arlington Street, this is one of many in the artist’s portfolio that capture cityscapes in proximity to the renowned Copley Society (“the oldest non-profit art association in the United States, with a history dating back to 1879,” where Lovely is recognized as a Copley Master). A model Lovely used for several works while learning portraiture brought her husband along and the artist decided to include both figures in this stroll at dusk. They were walking their dogs which would later inspire Lovely’s personal preference for westies and subsequently their abundant featuring in her works. This evening scene against a street of boutiques and galleries echoes several in Lovely’s collection, a rehearsed tonal “mood” of cool yellows and blues, with muted, limited coloring capturing half-light after sunset, before the night sky turns dark.
