Candace Being Candlish on Canvas
One of Lovely’s most multi-layered pieces visually and symbolically in all the chosen imagery and related detail, it also happens to be a self portrait. Unpacking the literal layers, the artist painstakingly integrates the highlight and shadow of each lattice composing the trellis, built of Xs, Os, and the slightly more obvious hearts in the entrance. Lovely refers to this as her homage to the neoclassical painter Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. The list of ingredients are also an homage to the artist’s handiwork herself, having “handled” every element here, designing the trellis and garden, tending the abundant flowers, and subjecting herself as subject. Preferring the (again, layered) wordplay in the final title, Lovely considered as an alternate, “Venus Visits Vermont.”
