Charles Street Umbrellas
In the artist’s history and understandable love affair with the city of Boston, she rose early one morning to “see the streetlights on Charles Street” and paint this scene. “My ambition,” Lovely says, “was to get the blue skies and lights mixing together in that half-light, with the feeling of that area of Boston, on Charles Street, Beacon Hill, and people starting their day.” She goes on to point out the strength of the triangle shapes drawing the eye to different spots on the canvas – the umbrellas, the “vessel” housing the streetlamps, and the people themselves, artistically speaking (in the underlying sketch).
