Companions in the Garden
The official White House portrait of First Lady Barbara Bush, this personal commission was destined to hang in residence at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum. Undoubtedly the artist’s most famous and culturally influential creation, the initiation of this painting began with a letter to Mrs. Bush from Lovely herself. Expressing interest in painting the Bush family grandchildren in portraiture, a camaraderie was struck between Lovely and the then-current First Lady. Mrs. Bush’s requests were to be painted with her trademark pearls, a book to symbolize her literacy platform, and her beloved dog MIllie. As a subtle signature from the artist, you’ll also find Lovely’s trademark “puff hat with pink bow” featured prominently in the fore.
