Downtown Woodstock
This piece marks an era in the artist’s creative progression when, as she describes, “I started painting what I know.” Lovely returned to childhood spots to capture the visuals, but more so to translate a sensation to canvas. Here the warm tones play against the cool, creating a tonal painting that pulls the viewer into an enveloping scene. Lovely washes the canvas with detail and invitation. The foreground’s slush of tire tracks underscores a main-street midwinter feel. The eye is drawn upward from town to the historic architecture housed in heavy background blues. Finally, the warmth created (visual or emotional) of lights in storefronts and on lampposts create a quaint comfort. Previously said of this piece, “Woodstock Vermont is the proverbial New England village painted here with a cleansing, beautiful snowfall. You can almost hear the hiss of snow falling and the children hoping for a day off school.”
