One of Candace Lovely’s earlier works, this portrait and birthday gift was also the artist’s first commission piece. Painted in Palmetto Dunes, on Hilton Head Island South Carolina, it captures a brother and sister duo in a candid moment of play. With the older sibling helping the younger to learn to set sail to model boats, the pair is featured in a soft morning light with cool outdoor shadows and warm highlights. Notice as the shadows reflect themselves they turn warmer than the base blues of the ocean setting, a companion to the mauve and pink-purple tones that anchor the palette throughout.
