Lowcountry Crabbing
This traditional Lowcountry scene was captured off Burkes Beach near Folly Field on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Making her audience once again voyeur, one of the artist’s favorite approaches to the imagery she chooses, this moment was “all about nature” in Lovely’s words. “It’s all natural, except for the pier,” and that includes both definitions of the word, as Lovely adds, “it’s the nature of a man to hunt” (in relationship to her painting women gathering flowers in baskets etcetera). “The tide was coming in and here was this man, finding his supper out of a tidal creek with flowers in bloom,” she describes of the yellow asters among the sweetgrass and the low line of pines crowning the yellow-greens and blues for which Lowcountry imagery is known.
