Merit of Elegance
Lovely’s first Boston School still life, she describes the demanding student environment as “something they’d make you really work at – to get a still life approved” adding that she’d gotten to the point of getting them accepted quickly. A memorable contribution to this piece: when her instructor saw she’d pinned the ribbon in place, “he removed the pins, turned the ribbon on his finger, rolled it up, tossed it and it bounced into place. “This is dance,” he said, “let the ribbon express itself.” The combined expression here is “peace and grace”: Painted in a Fenway Studio in north side light, the setting is balanced with shells on either side with the Three Graces dominating the frame, and embraced by the band of yellow, a color chosen to represent peace.
