Port Royal Reader
Though a familiar theme for Lovely with the lounging “fair woman” figure, with hat, bow, book, and nearly translucent pink parasol, Lovely also turns the dial here with vivid impact on both style and palette. Compared to traditional beachscapes with lounging subject, this piece is more Fitzgerald than Laura Ashley, more rugged than rose kissed, more electric than pastel. In lieu of her traditional rosa rugosa and trailing vine, here the viewer is treated to stark, straw toned reeds filling the powdery dunes, adding a nearly daffodil yellow to the cool coastal afternoon. Emphasizing the color choice, the sun-soaked blooms in the lower right set a scene that unrolls over the untamed dunes beyond. Setting a scene of both solitude in the foreground and possibility in the expanse of sky and sea at the top, this piece uniquely captures the feel of solitude at the sea.
