Searching for Shells
This is a scene in the artist’s own words that she could “endlessly paint — like Manet’s haystacks.” White flowing dresses, bows and parasols, summer hats and Nantucket baskets, and “fair women on beachscapes” wading in soft, shallow tide while “gathering,” a fascination to Lovely as it relates to the nature of women. In addition to the layers of models in front of the sea, or parasols creating the texture of highlight and shadow, she adds layers of opposing shapes, one model enclosed and searching and the other a long and draping form reminiscent of Erté.
