Sharing Daffodils
Nearly a double entendre, this painting is as much titled for its subjects sharing daffodils with each other as it is the artist sharing them with the viewer. From midpoint to foreground, Lovely delivers an unapologetic abundance of vibrant yellow blooms nearly vibrating in the electricity of their color. In contrast, the dark line of pines offering a stark background is a familiar element in the Lowcountry area of South Carolina where you find this field – U Pik It Daffodil Field, Calhoun Plantation, Bluffton South Carolina. One of the artist’s “painting from life” creations, you find a little boy and girl perched in the tree in the center of the field, the boy with flowers in his ears, “sharing daffodils” on a very hot day. Painting in just an hour, the artist relied on large, chunky colors, “starting with the darkest darks,” Lovely explains, “and working my way up from there.”
