Spencer Hollow Meadow
The artist’s first award-winning painting, this piece is also the first in several interpretations of this landscape near Lovely’s childhood home. When she began studying seriously in 1980 and returned home to Springfield Vermont in 1983, she intentionally drove to see this scene which she says reminded her of several rehearsals on a theme by renowned painter Dennis Bunker’s Medfield paintings. “I saw this meadow in my hometown and thought, ‘I have to paint that.’ I noticed the similar reflections that I was studying in Bunker’s Medfield paintings, how the rocks were situated, the angle of the water, the brown tones.” Of the personal inspiration Lovely explains the setting reminds her of Psalm 23 when it encourages “He maketh me to lie down in green pastures.”
