Step Beach in June
One of the most picturesque beaches in Nantucket, it’s easy to see why in Lovely’s perfectly captured beachscape. Standing on the cliff looking down toward Step Beach, from this bird’s-eye vantage point, the view assaults the senses with the call of the seaside. Near to far, the coastal cast of characters is overflowing. Beach roses welcome the eye in the foreground leading you down the path toward one of Lovely’s characteristic “Fair Women” interacting with a flourishing dune that blossoms most prominently in June. A few steps down, the attending beach shack overlooks a wide expanse of ocean, drawing the eye and heart out and away to sea, epitomized by the delicate fleet of sails advancing upon the horizon. Weaving in her delicate pinks and touches of white, the artist does not leave this piece void of her figure’s signature adornments, the summer maxi dress, pink parasol, summer hat, and one can presume a pinpoint Nantucket Basket.
