Summer Whites
The heart of the artist here was capturing this young woman engaging with the chair as children often do, “sitting in it any way but right,” intent on capturing that playfulness and lighthearted youthful spirit. Beyond that, the body language shows a watchfulness, which Lovely points out is a common theme among the female character on the island. Watching for the ships at sea to come in. All the signatures are front and center – the contrasting folds of the light and flowy feminine skirts, hat in hand, Nantucket basket, Nantucket garden, and surrounding sea. Of special note, is the artist’s careful craft of capturing the light and shadow of both banister and latticework.
