The Nutcracker
Completed when Lovely bought her Fenway studio #110, this piece spotlights the obvious title-based nutcracker in vivid detail while muting his equally prized surrounding cast of characters. “The nutcracker was from Germany,” Lovely notes, “the Swiss doll was collected after graduating from college on a European tour, the little boy in a hat was my grandmother’s doll Giuseppe, the boy on the rocking horse was a figure from Sunday school, that’s a Nantucket doll on the right, and I also included my ballet shoes and my mother’s music box.” Lovely also mentions apologizing to someone about this painting being unfinished in her opinion, adding after a pause, “my Christmasses are never finished.” She also says poignantly, “Painting is like a series of mistakes that you make beautiful; that represents the way you look at life, and paint.”
