Waiting for Sargent
Inspired by a prominent work from the painter John Singer Sargent (who painted in a Fenway Studio eventually owned by Lovely), this work is reflective of his piece The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit down to the wedge of red screen in the background and color choices in the decorative rug. This setting is a nearly tongue-in-check contribution in which Lovely exchanges daughters for Westies, one of her favorite stark-white elements to incorporate and which appear in a large number of her paintings. The Westies pictured here are figurines rather than her frequently painted personal pets, changing the dynamic of relationship and energy by relating figures to vases as additional pieces of still life, and further evidenced by the oversized corner of area rug with bulky ropes of fringe.
